Leveraging Lived Experience

The Power of Lived Experience

Sharing Lived Experiences

Here are some of the places you may find individuals with lived experience sharing their stories and expertise.

Giving Speeches: Sharing personal stories and insights at conferences, workshops, or community events to raise awareness and foster understanding.

Participating in Research Projects: Contributing personal perspectives to research studies, focus groups, or surveys to ensure that findings reflect real-world experiences.

Consulting on Policy Development: Advising policymakers and organizations on mental health policies to help create more supportive and humane systems.

Designing Programs: Helping to develop and tailor mental health programs and resources to better address the needs of individuals based on lived experiences.

Providing Training: Facilitating training sessions or workshops to educate others on mental health issues and effective support strategies.

Reviewing Materials: Offering feedback on educational materials, resources, or public information to ensure they are accurate and empathetic.

Mentoring: Supporting and guiding others who are navigating similar challenges, using personal experience to offer practical advice and encouragement.

Participating in Advisory Boards: Serving on advisory committees or boards to provide ongoing input on mental health initiatives and community projects.

Contributing to Public Campaigns: Assisting in the development and execution of public awareness campaigns to destigmatize mental health and promote supportive practices.

Engaging in Community Outreach: Engaging with local communities to promote mental health awareness and connect individuals with necessary resources and support.

People with lived experience bring invaluable wisdom and passion. If you need a deeper perspective on your services or a better understanding of experiences you haven’t lived through, we’d be happy to connect you with a Peer Supporter who can offer the insights and support you need.

When we talk about Lived Experience in Mental Health, we are often referring to someone who has navigated a period of:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Challenges around Eating

  • Self-Harm

Peer Supporters - Providing A Valuable and Unique Perspective

At Stress Recovery Coach, we leverage the lived expertise of our Peer Supporters to offer profound insights into mental health projects and policy development.

Peer Supporters have lived personal experience within the mental health system.  It is for this reason they can provide invaluable insight and perspectives to their clients, to policy makers, to community services organizations, and other decision makers who are attempting to improve the mental health care system.

Past experiences, may have motivated Peer Supporters to be passionate about contributing to create more humane systems by advising on strategic decisions, participating in focus groups, shaping project goals, and influencing policy changes. Their lived experiences are utilized to directly guide and enhance the development of more effective and empathetic solutions.

Peer Support isn’t about labels or diagnoses. Instead, we focus on wellness and recovery strategies that help individuals discover and apply practices for their own well-being. Our approach is all about empowering individuals to ascertain what works best for them as they work towards building a fulfilling life centered around personal growth and happiness.
